The Ionian coast at Caminia

Calabria

Calabria is told at the table.
Calabria is the tip of Italy: the Tyrrhenian on one side, the Ionian on the other, and the mountains in between. For more than a century, people left: for the Americas, for the North, for Germany. Those who stayed looked after the house, the vineyard and the table. Our family stayed, and our wine was made for that table.

The table

In our house, wine is opened at the table, with whoever is there. Carmela cooked for those who worked in the vineyard and for those who came to taste, and at harvest time the house filled up. WALTER leaves this table and travels a long way, sealed in its wooden case. Whoever opens it does what we do: lays the table, calls someone over, pours. If you are ever passing this way, there is a place for you too.

A hand laying the table
Two seas, one vineyard in between. Those who left took Calabria with them. We put it in the bottle.
